What Is The Best Water Filter For Removing Chlorine, Lead and Other Harmful Contaminants?

What Is The Best Water Filter For Removing Chlorine, Lead and Other Harmful Contaminants?

Water Filter

You want to be sure that you get the very best water filter you can to ensure that all of the harmful contaminants are removed and the water is as clean, safe and pure as possible. Unfortunately, most of the water in public systems contains thousands of dangerous chemicals, including chlorine, lead, volatile organics and synthetics like pesticides and herbicides.

To solve the problem of unsafe water, many people rely on bottled to keep them safe. Unfortunately, bottled water is rarely adequately filtered and is not a well-regulated business. Companies can bottle what is basically tap water and package it in a way that makes it appear to be a cleaner and healthier option. Water from wells, though not tied into municipal water systems, can be full of unwanted chemicals and minerals. The good news is that quality home water filters are out there, and they can help you take control of the cleanliness of your water.

There are many different companies selling what they claim to be the best water filter. All will promise to get the job done for you, but if you want to compare performance of specific units, you can review each system's Performance Data Sheet. This report tells you what kinds of contaminants the system is capable of removing from your water. In some states, this info must be available on the packaging of the product. If you can't find it there, check the manufacturer's website. Companies that are honestly selling the best water filters will be proud to display the performance information of their filtration systems.

One thing to remember as you learn about filtration is that quality home water filters are not designed to remove everything from your water. There are trace minerals such as potassium and magnesium that are naturally present in water, and to remove them from water may keep your body from getting what it needs for proper health. Distilled water, for example, that has no mineral content at all, is believed to cause mineral deficiencies and other health problems in those who drink it long-term. So, the best water filters you can find will effectively remove chlorine, biological and chemical contaminants, but allow trace minerals through the system.

Another thing to consider as you look into buying a water filter is which outlets in your home you want to use a filter on. The best water filter set-up is to install one at each location in your home where water is consumed or used for bathing. This would include the kitchen and all bathrooms. You should also consider installing a filter on your shower. Research has shown that the body absorbs both water and its contaminants during a typical shower. And chemicals present in unfiltered water are released in water vapor and inhaled by occupants of the home.

If quality home water filters are on your list of projects, be sure to do some research and comparison shopping so that you purchase the best water filter you can find. There is no other way to make sure the water you use to drink and bathe is as safe as it can be.

When to Change a Carbon Water Filter to Avoid Health and Plumbing Problems

When to Change a Carbon Water Filter to Avoid Health and Plumbing Problems

Water Filter

Having carbon water filtration in your home is one of the simplest and most inexpensive ways to replicate the forces of nature within your home. A carbon water filter works much the same way natural water filtration does. But while nature has ways to deal with the material that filtered out, it all stays within man made filter cartridges. This can cause problems with health and with the proper operation of the filter so it's important to keep up with maintenance.

In nature there is a continual process that removes contaminants from water as is passes through soil. The bacterial contaminants either die or migrate elsewhere out of the soil. Physical particles will get trapped in the natural carbon of the soil while the now clean water makes it through and collects elsewhere.

Since this continual process cannot take place within the carbon filters of your home filtration systems you need to manually replace the cartridges. The frequency of this replacement depends in large part to the brand and the type of cartridge you are using, as well as how much water you pass through the filter. In some cases you will need to replace the filter every few weeks while with other types you can go many months.

The type of filter cartridge that requires the most frequent replacement are the small faucet mounted filters. These are very convenient water filters in that there is no pitcher to fill, but since it is physically smaller the carbon will get used up more quickly by being filled with contaminants. Certain brands of these filters will have an indicator to tell you when the filter needs to be changed, while others lack that feature. If your carbon cartridge does not have this kind of indicator then you should consider changing it at least once each month, or when the water flow decreases noticeably.

With pitcher style water filter systems you can go a bit longer between cartridge replacements. In many cases you can go about three months. This makes it somewhat simpler to remember when to replace the cartridge as you can schedule it to coincide with each quarter of the year. You can also plan to have a year's worth of filters on hand for replacement, and this would only be four filters.

There are also refrigerators with water dispensers that have built in water filtration. With this type of dispenser it's fairly typical that there will be an indicator on the refrigerator door that will indicate when the filter is in need of replacement. While it may be tempting to ignore these warnings and just hit the reset button, there are some very good reason to carry out the recommended replacement.

For the health argument, you don't know for how much longer the filter will be effective. While there is a certain level of safety built in to the time limits on the filter cartridges, you don't really know how long that is and you don't know how long it will be before the contaminants that were filtered out will get back into your water due to the carbon being saturated.

How to Purify Drinking Water at Home - How Do People Turn Dirty Water Into Drinking Water?

How to Purify Drinking Water at Home - How Do People Turn Dirty Water Into Drinking Water?

Water Filter

Wondering how to purify drinking water at home? Let's face it, none of us want our family drinking unhealthy and unsafe water. This article will explain how to purify drinking water at home, which type of system you should use to purify your tap water, and which contaminants you should aim to remove.

One of the best ways to purify drinking water at home is installing a quality home water filtration system. There's simply no reason to waste your money on bottle water since most of it is not under regulation by the government since it's sold within state lines. For just a few extra pennies a gallon, a home water filter can provide your household with clean and pure water.

The key to choosing a quality and reliable home water purification system is looking for one that removes the right kind of contaminants. Obviously, 99.9% removal of all contaminants is ideal. The key contaminants you want to make sure a water filter removes include:

*Lead - comes from pipes, fixtures, and soldering joints between the water main in your street and your faucet.

*Chlorine - used as a disinfectant agent in most water treatment plants around the world.

*Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) - includes all synthetic chemicals found in drinking water. Known to cause cancer and disrupt liver, kidney, and nervous system performance.

*THMs - chlorine byproducts that are known carcinogens. They are the leading cause of bladder and rectal cancer. Also adversely affect nervous system function as well as kidney and liver function. Women with breast cancer have been found to have 50-60% higher levels of THMs in their breast tissue than women not suffering from breast cancer.

*Pesticides and Herbicides- often end up in our tap water system thanks to agricultural runoff and floods.

*MTBE - an additive used to increase the octane level in gasoline

IMPORTANT! While a quality home water purification system should remove all of the contaminants listed above, it SHOULD NOT remove the natural minerals that are found in water like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and so on. Our bodies are build to run on BOTH healthy water and the minerals naturally found in it. Reverse osmosis water filters and distillation remove these beneficial minerals, and regularly drinking water produced by these systems can lead to serious mineral deficiencies.

pH Water - Alkaline Water

pH Water - Alkaline Water

Water Filter

Pure, clean, alkaline water has become such a concern that it is estimated that 50 percent of us now drink bottled water. In fact, we now pay more for it than we do gasoline. But be aware, The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) conducted a four-year study on 103 brands of bottled water and found that one-third of those brands contained synthetic and organic chemicals and bacteria, making them unsafe for human consumption. The council reported that one brand, labeled "spring water," actually came from an industrial parking lot near a hazardous waste site.

In 2001 alone, the Environmental Protection agency reported 82,000 violations of safe drinking water standards, affecting more than 78 million Americans. Don't assume that if your home's tap water looks, tastes and smells OK that it is safe. Many of the most dangerous contaminants cannot be detected with your senses. Dr. Joseph Price, author of "Coronaries, Cholesterol and Chlorine", believes there is a strong correlation between chlorine being introduced into our water supply in 1904 and our present epidemic of heart disease, cancer and senility. "The basic cause of arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, and most forms of stroke is... the chlorine in processed water." he writes.

Now where can you find good, healthy, clean, alkaline water. Most likely, to your surprise, you can get good water right at your own sink through distilling or reverse-osmosis (purified) filtering.

Distillation is the evaporation and condensation of water. Distilled water comes closest to rainwater, which, if our atmosphere wasn't so polluted, would be the ideal source of water. Reverse-osmosis is a multi-filter process that purifies water of toxic chemicals and large mineral deposits.

Both processes make the water more neutral, and it can then be made more alkaline as necessary with the addition of pH drops. When added to the pure, neutral water you drink, and thus added to your bloodstream, pH drops act as an oxygen catalyst, alkalizing, neutralizing, oxygenating, and pH balancing the body. Pure alkaline water.

Whichever method you choose, buying distilled water, distilling it yourself, reverse-osmosis filters, drops, just stock your fridge or pantry with good water. And drink up the pure alkaline water! Drinking between meals is especially important. You can squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice in your drinking water to boost its alkalizing effects. Don't forget to add SuperGreens for an absolutely energizing spark to your day. This is a great way to start each day - hydrated, energized and focused.

Plenty of alkaline water is the key to overall good health, along with quality supplements that your body can absorb. After all, your body is 70% water and your blood even more at 94%. Learn where to obtain pure, healthy, alkaline water. Click on the link below.

Why Filtered Tap Water Is Better Than Unfiltered Tap Water and Bottled Water

Why Filtered Tap Water Is Better Than Unfiltered Tap Water and Bottled Water

Water Filter

What kind of water do you drink? Bottled? From the tap? Are you concerned about the purity of the water you drink? Do you worry about chemicals in your water? Are you thinking of buying a water filter, but don't know which type to buy?

Drinking good old H2O is likely the single most important thing we can do for our health. Just a 2% drop can cause dehydration and reduce our physical and mental performance. Without it we would perish in just a few days. As important as water is, many of us worry about the purity of the water we drink, and it that weren't enough to worry about we now must consider the environment when making choices about water.

Purity and environmental sustainability are what matter when it comes to making smart choices about water. So let's take a look at tap, bottled and filtered water more closely.

Tap Water

Tap water is there for all of us to drink thanks to our public utility systems. We just turn on the tap and out it flows. If you've lived or traveled in a country where there is no clean public water, you will understand what a blessing tap water is! It is safe to drink, however, because of the earth's hydrological system, the same water is recylcled over and over again, and because we humans have introduced over 75,000 toxic chemicals into this system, the purity of our tap water is questionable. The many chemicals we use in our everyday lives inevitably wind up in our water as do chemicals from industry and agriculture.

Bottled Water

Is bottled water really pure and is it sustainable? Hardly.

40% of bottled water comes form the tap, the same stuff you draw from your own tap at home. There is very little regulation for bottled water so it is difficult to be certain about what you are really getting. Bottled water is also expensive. Or rather the marketing of it is expensive and this is what people pay from to a gallon for. It is bad for the environment. The production (and recycling) of plastic bottles and the transportation of water, sometimes from across the globe, produce large amounts of CO2. This is unnecessary and harmful to the environment.

While not all bottled water is bad it is on the whole is an expensive convenience and not good for our environment.

Filtered Water

Water filtering systems take our sustainable yet imperfect public water systems and turn them into a safer and sustainable option and free flowing filtered water from your tap costs only pennies a day.

Filter systems fall into two categories: carbon filtration and reverse osmosis. Carbon systems are thought to be very effective at removing contaminants and are very good value for money. Reverse osmosis systems claim to be the most effective and are somewhat higher priced. Makers of carbon filters claim that reverse osmosis systems should not be used because also remove healthy minerals.

Both carbon filtration and reverse osmosis systems can be installed at 'point of use' (right at the tap) or at the main water line ('whole house' system). Only carbon filters are available as 'pitcher water filters' (like Britta systems). These are cheap and practical, but are the least effective in removing impurities.

Water is absolutely essential for good health and for our survival so if the only water you have is unfiltered from the tap, by all means drink it! But in our own homes we can make wise choices and when choosing between tap, bottled or filtered water, filtered is the best option.

Filtered water is the healthiest most economical and environmentally friendly water we can drink.

Water Filters Can Clean Fruits Of Contaminants

Water Filters Can Clean Fruits Of Contaminants

Water Filter

Much discussion on water filters has been circulating in the media as of late because of the health concern in today's lifestyle of living. We all want water on the go and carry bottled varieties. We have filters in our house, under our sink, in the shower to remove chlorine and in the laundry to get our towels and clothes their cleanest and fluffiest.

With all of this concern about our water we are still eating fruits and vegetables which are full of pesticides and bacteria. Did you know that some water filters can remove the pesticides in these fruits and vegetables before you consume them.

Many people buy organic produce for the healthy benefit of pesticide free products, but at what price? You will pay usually double the price for any organic fruit or vegetable and usually get a smaller quantity. If you purchase a water filter with the capability of purifying your produce you will recoup your initial investment in the water filter quickly versus always paying high prices for organic foods.

All you do is place the fruit or veggies in a large bowl and cover with water and use the filter to bubble out the contaminants. It takes about 20 minutes. You can also use a purified type of water from this machine that gives this benefit and pour it onto the fruit or vegetables in a bowl by covering them with the water and let sit momentarily. It uses the principal of ozone which is required by the FDA in for all companies that produce bottled water consumers buy. It is a new unique idea in purifying the things we consume in addition to the water.

Not every type of water filter offers this benefit. This type of H2O purifier uses a process called ozone and can remove bacteria and some pesticides from fruits and vegetables submerged into water and then run this type of water purifier by placing a plastic tube from the purifier machine into the bowl of liquid.

This is an interesting new option that is now available to consumers.

Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Filter - Health & Safety Concerns

Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Filter - Health & Safety Concerns

Water Filter

Thinking about getting a countertop reverse osmosis water filter for your home? Well, before you do get one, here are a few health and safety concerns that come with using them.

First of all, it's worth knowing how a countertop reverse osmosis water filter works. In a nutshell, it removes most sediment, particulate, and suspended solids that are molecularly larger than water is.

Originally, they were only used in the commercial sector. The printing, photo, and medical fields used machinery that required the use of water free of any type of solids, particulate, and minerals. But as the popularity of home filtration grew, manufacturers felt that they could rake in some of these profits.

In my research of countertop reverse osmosis water filter systems, I discovered that the water they produce actually poses a few additional health and safety concerns. For example, without the use of a carbon filter, synthetic chemicals cannot be removed (since they're smaller in size than water molecules).

But more importantly, they only produce demineralized water. Many experts are saying that drinking demineralized water over the long-run can pose serious health concerns, including mineral deficiencies, increased free radical production, and even an increased chance of developing cancer at some point in life.

Now since the main purpose of getting a home water filtration system is to protect our self and our family's health, getting a countertop reverse osmosis water filter just doesn't make sense, in my opinion.

Through our extensive research, my family and I were able to find filtration systems that produce more safer and healthier water- water free of harmful contaminants but still containing beneficial minerals.

And since price was important for us as well, other options seemed to be much cheaper than countertop reverse osmosis water filter systems. The countertop system we ended up going with was initially cheaper than any countertop reverse osmosis water filter we saw, and it's ongoing cost-of-use was more than twice as cheap, costing us only 9 cents for a whole gallon of pure, safe, healthy drinking water.

Storm Water Filters - Protecting Our Groundwater From Chemicals and Debris in Storm Water Run-Off

Storm Water Filters - Protecting Our Groundwater From Chemicals and Debris in Storm Water Run-Off

Water Filter

Do you cringe every time you see sediment, cigarette butts, candy wrappers and other debris washed down the drain? Don't stand by idly! Read on to find out how to stop it.

Seriously. There's no need to just watch and do nothing. You can stop all that debris and a whole lot more from contaminating the water supply.

Just use storm water filters, especially with a storm drain filter insert. The water will flow through but all the junk will stay in the filter and can be removed safely.

And that's good news for the environment. Especially since the candy wrappers and cigarette butts are the least of the environmental threats that would be flowing into the ground water.

Think oil and chemical residues, particularly from parking lots and other places where cars and machinery are parked. They will leak all sorts of noxious fluids, from oil to coolants.

I'm sure you're aware that storm water pollution is a big concern. It keeps officials searching for solutions not just nationally, but locally as well.

And you can help, simply by installing storm water filters in the drains under your control. They will remove any waste from the storm water that flows down the drain. That way, it cannot become a problem, and the water system's safety is maintained.

Depending on the kind of debris or chemicals that are likely to be in the storm water run-off, you can choose different filters and especially filter inserts.

There's the Ultra-DrainGuard Trash and Debris Model especially for debris removal. And then there's the Ultra-DrainGuard Oil and Sediment Model, which effectively removes grease as well as oil along with sediment as the water passes through.

You can even get models with X-Tex absorbent filter strips for extra filtering power.

And just in case you wondered just how much those filters can capture and remove from the water as it washes down the drain...

Depending on the kind of filter you get, they can remove up to 40 pounds or 1 whole cubic foot of sediment before the water reaches the bypass ports and the filter insert needs to be replaced. And when it's new, water can flow through at the rate of 500 gallons per minute. Oil filters can hold more than a gallon of oil, depending on size.

And when the storm water filters are full, just replace them and they'll resume their work.

Faucet Water Filters - Do They Work?

Faucet Water Filters - Do They Work?

Water Filter

People tend to use a faucet water filter on the kitchen tap for two reasons. They want pure clean water to drink and the systems are very simple to install and maintain.

Most installations take less then an hour and once installed provide up to 6 months of filtered drinking water. The system needs a be a two stage filter system in order to work. Anything else is a waste of time and money and a risk to your health.

The filter system has to remove lead, chlorine, VOCs,(Volatile Organic Compounds) MTBE (Methyl tert-butyl ether) and chlorine resistant parasites/cysts. Especially chlorine, while It does a very effective job removing bacteria and viruses from water, it is a very toxic chemical and it must be removed from water before the water is drunk.

Once installed the faucet water filter should provide at least 500 gallons of water or last 6 months while providing water that is cleaner purer and tastier than bottled water.

With myriad choices on the market today, many faucet water filters are sold by companies which huge marketing budgets and a dazzling array of scientific terms used to impress the weary shopper. Who simply wants the best value for her family, but winds up completely overwhelmed by choice.

The big question she asks herself is "Do they work? Will they produce clean water for my family?" Unfortunately some do and some don't.

During my research I have discovered a company whose faucet water filters meet or exceed all requirements in providing fresh clean water right from your kitchen tap. Year in and year out this company has won consumer awards for best product and best value.

Pure Water Technology - Find Out How Two Simple Filters Can Give You Massive Protection

Pure Water Technology - Find Out How Two Simple Filters Can Give You Massive Protection

Water Filter

You should really take advantage of pure water technology for your countertop and shower, because it could just help to extend your life. Most of us fail to realize the extent of the affect that the staggering number of contaminants in our water supply is having on our lives. That is until we begin to experience health related problems that can be traced back to one or more toxins or carcinogens present in our reservoirs.

If you don't think that one day drinking unfiltered tap water is going to affect your health someday, then you are kidding yourself. Many of those in the medical field truly believe that the single greatest cause of the startling rise in the cancer rate has been the introduction of chlorine into the water supply. It might not be all because of chlorine however, since there are more than 2,100 other carcinogens present as well.

Thanks to pure water technology, through the use of two simple filters, you can remove approximately 99% of the carcinogens and toxic chemical agents from your drinking water. An activated granular carbon filter and multi media block are designed to help greatly lower the affect that contaminants in your drinking water have on your health. Activated granular carbon is the key element in showerhead filters as well.

You may be one of those people who can sort of see why we might need to take action to eliminate pollutants from our drinking water, but not understand the affect that contaminants in shower water have on our health. Chemical agents vaporize far more rapidly than water does, so that steam you are breathing in while washing in the morning doesn't come from water.

What a lot of us don't realize is that you can absorb as much as 6,000 times more of the chemicals present in your water through your open pores and the porous tissue of your lungs than you would get from drinking unfiltered tap water all day. The enlistment of pure water technology in the showerhead filter you use can reduce the toxins in the air by as much as 90%.

Please be sure to utilize pure water technology for your countertop and shower, because I would hate to think that you would allow yourself to fall victim to something as preventable as contamination in your water. Take steps to protect yourself and your family, because it truly can make a difference.

Homemade Tap Water Filter - Nice Way to Purify Drinking Water

Homemade Tap Water Filter - Nice Way to Purify Drinking Water

Water Filter

A homemade water filter is a nice way of purifying the tap water. One major advantage is that you make it yourself so you know exactly how it works. Its unlike a good looking commercial filter which claims a lot but stops functioning after a certain interval of time.

A homemade filter will always work because you know how it works. In case it doesn't you will immediately open it up and set up everything right. You can make one yourself at a fraction of the cost of a commercial one. There are even more advantages. Those electronic filters are in no way better than one you can make yourself if you get the right instructions.

The major advantages of using a self-made filter are:

You know how it works.
No need to spend thousands on a commercial one.
Have multiple ones at various places in your home instead of just on in the kitchen.
Make it work better than the ones which only look good.
Takes very little time to make yourself using a good guide.
Lasts for several years so you won't have to build one every year.
Filters lots of water unlike the conventional ones.

The water supply systems in various US Cities are more than a century old. There is an increasing amount of lead coming into the drinking water resulting from corrosion of water pipes. Even there is greater risk of pathogens, toxic chemicals and other contaminants. You must know how to clean your water yourself and not depend upon the water supply systems. You can't expect them to do 100%.

Especially people with weak immune systems, young children, pregnant ladies and elderly people are more prone to diseases and infections due to polluted or contaminated drinking water. Imagine you are able to make a water filter which works better than the ones you buy from the market. Check out Make A Water Filter Guide and find out yourself whether it's the right thing for you or not.

Which Water Purification Systems Are Best? - A Comparison of the Three Most Common Technologies

Which Water Purification Systems Are Best? - A Comparison of the Three Most Common Technologies

Water Filter

Fresh water is essential to our health and comfort. Not only do we rely on it to stay hydrated, we use it in many other ways including bathing, cleaning and cooking food, and laundering our clothes. Fresh water has long been a concern of both public communities and private individuals, and several different water purification systems and treatment technologies have been developed to help ensure that tap water is safe for human consumption. But how do these different technologies compare?

Whether you get your water from a well or a city system, water sources can become contaminated by bacteria, runoff, and improper treatment. Even if water isn't contaminated, it may contain iron and other hard minerals that cause discoloration and can build up in the body, or chlorine that leaves an unpleasant odor and taste. Consequently, many people choose to treat or filter their water to improve flavor and protect against contaminants.

Chlorine is commonly used by municipal water treatment plants and is effective in killing many different bacteria. However, it is not effective against some organisms such as Cryposporidium and Giardia. Both of these organisms can be found in lakes, rivers, and ground water and can cause serious intestinal illness.

As mentioned, many people feel that chlorine leaves an unpleasant taste and smell. In addition, there have been numerous cases where the city water supply became contaminated despite the fact that it was treated. People with city water supplies often use other water purifiers and home water filters to ensure that their water is pure and tastes good. The three most common options are carbon filters, reverse osmosis water filters, and ultraviolet light water purification.

Each of these technologies uses a different approach to treat water, and they each have different levels of effectiveness against various contaminants. One may work well to remove chemicals but be completely ineffective against bacteria, and vice versa.

In reality, there is no single filter or treatment that will eliminate every contaminant from your water. The best approach is to have your water tested for contaminants and then purchase a home water purifier that guards against the particular contaminants that cause you concern.

Another option is to combine treatment technologies. Most higher-end systems use a combination of carbon filters and one of the other treatment technologies to achieve the best results. Let's look at the different technologies to see where each is effective.

Carbon Filters

Carbon is one of the most powerful absorbents available and it has been used for many years as a means of removing impurities. The absorbing powers of carbon can be further enhanced by adding a slightly positive electrical charge. This is known as activated carbon, and it is used in many standard home water filters. As the water passes over the positively charged carbon, the negative ions of the contaminants are drawn to the surface of the carbon granules and removed from the water.

Activated carbon filters typically use granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered block carbon. Both work well for filtering and purifying but carbon block filters have been shown to remove more contaminants. Either type of activated carbon filters help reduce or remove a wide variety of contaminants, including:

o volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)
o pesticides and herbicides
o chlorine, radon, and other chemicals often found in tap water.

All of this protection comes in a relatively inexpensive package. You can purchase carbon filter systems that fit on your faucet for about , or you can choose a whole house water purification system that utilizes carbon filter technology for around 0.

However, unless they are densely compacted, most carbon block filters are not effective at removing heavy metals or bacteria. For this reason, many people consider combining carbon filters with one of the other types of water purification systems.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

Reverse osmosis, also known as hyperfiltration or ultra-filtration, was developed with U.S. government funding as a means of desalinating ocean water. A reverse osmosis water purifier uses a semi-permeable membrane that allows pure water to pass through it, while contaminants are trapped by the tiny pores in the membrane.

The process requires that the water be pressurized to help force it through the membrane. Most standard residential water systems have sufficient pressure. Like activated carbon filters, reverse osmosis also uses charged particles to help filter out impurities.

The effectiveness of a reverse osmosis water purifier depends on the density of the membrane. A membrane with larger pores will obviously let larger impurities pass through. It is also important that the membrane be cleaned regularly for proper functioning.

Higher quality reverse osmosis water filters use a process known as crossflow to allow the membrane to continually clean itself. Crossflow directs some of the water downstream from the membrane, sweeping the rejected contaminants away so they do not build up and block the membrane.

There are two types of membranes commonly used in reverse osmosis water filters --Thin Film Composite (TFC) and Cellulose Triacetate (CTA). TFC membranes are noticeably more effective the CTA membranes but they tend to be less resistant to the deteriorating effects of chlorine. This problem can be avoided by using an activated carbon pre-filter to remove the chlorine first.
Reverse osmosis water purifiers come in different sizes and styles including countertop and whole house water purification systems. They are capable of filtering out a long list of contaminants including:

o chlorine and other treatment related products
o bacteria
o salts, sugars, proteins
o dyes
o heavy metals

One drawback of reverse osmosis water filters is that they are more expensive than carbon filter treatment systems, with the average home system costing around 0. Also, the purification process is usually somewhat slow due to the use of pressurized water. It can take an entire day to produce 15 gallons of purified water. And a typical reverse osmosis water purifier may need up to 8 gallons of untreated water to generate a single gallon of purified water.

UV Water Purification

As the name implies, ultraviolet light water purification systems use ultraviolet (UV) light to treat water and render microorganisms harmless. The UV light comes from a high intensity lamp that is usually enclosed in a protective quartz sleeve. When water passes through the water treatment system, the UV light damages the structure of any organisms and makes them sterile.

Although a UV water purifier requires electricity to operate, it draws about the same amount of energy as a light bulb. However, the lamp bulb itself needs to be replaced every year to ensure adequate intensity.

While whole house UV water purification systems are effective on most bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other organisms, they do not remove chlorine, heavy metals, VOCs, or other chemicals. And countertop UV systems, which expose the water to UV lighting for less time, do not always remove all organisms.

UV water purifiers average around 0 for a whole house system, making them more expensive initially than other types of treatments. In addition, without a pre-filter system, contaminants can build up and reduce the intensity of the UV lamp. For these reasons, many people combine UV water purification systems with carbon filters, which also increases the costs.

As you can see, each of the three common water treatment technologies has its advantages and drawbacks. Deciding which is best depends on your budget and the type of water contaminants you want to remove or prevent. A test of your tap water will help you determine the appropriate water filtration system for your needs.
